Minister Kulhánek at Bled Strategic Forum and EU Foreign Ministers Meeting in Slovenia

On September 2, 2021, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Jakub Kulhánek participated in Bled Strategic Forum. It was followed by the EU Foreign Ministers meeting (Gymnich) focused on current situation in Afghanistan.

The 16th Bled Strategic Forum (BSF) held a title Future of Europe. Minister Kulhánek participated at EU’s Challenging Eastern Partnership Summit 2021: Calibrating its Agenda panel discussion, with the keynote address delivered by the Belarus oposition leader Sviatlana Cichanouskaya. The minister stressed that the EU support of the Eastern neighbours must focus primarily on particular projects. The Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu, the Chatham House Orysia Lutschevych, the EC Katarína Mathernová, and Georgia Deputy Foreign Minister Teimuraz Janjalia were among other panelists.

On the same day, BSF was followed by the EU Foreign Ministers informal meeting (Gymnich) at Brdo Congress Center. The main focus was on the current situation in Afghanistan. They stressed the need for the EU to work with Afghanistan's neighbours and other key international actors to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan and a possible migration wave towards Europe. Ministers also agreed on an integrated Union strategy towards Afghanistan that takes into account all security aspects – from migration to the threat of terrorist attacks and the illegal drug trade.

The second day of the meeting was aimed at discussing the EU's relationship with China. Ministers agreed that the unity and coordinated approach of all Member States of the Union to China is crucial. Any re-engagement of the EU must be gradual, orderly and coordinated.
