Conference "30 Years Since the Fall of the Iron Curtain" in Ljubljana

On 17 October 2019 the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Ljubljana together with the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Ljubljana organised a conference with the name "30 Years Since the Fall of the Iron Curtain". The conference was held in the premises of the European Commission Representation in Slovenia and under the auspices of the president of the National Council of Slovenia Alojz Kovšca.

The conference was focused on changes of the world order after the fall of the Iron Curtain, the democratisation process in Czechoslovakia and its successor states, the role of the relations between the Czechs and Slovaks and the path of the Central European states to the Euro-Atlantic structures.

The conference featured the representatives of the Czech, Slovak and Slovene academic community. Namely prof. Bojko Bučar from the University of Ljubljana, dr. Alica Kizeková, senior researcher at the Institute of International Relations in Prague, dr. Veronika Zapletalová, assistant professor at the Masaryk University in Brno, dr. Adam Hudek, senior researcher at the Institute of History of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The opening speeches were delivered by Zoran Stančič, the Head of the European Commission Representation in Slovenia, Juraj Chmiel, the Ambassador of the Czech Republic, and Eva Ponomarenková, the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic.

Z. Stančič emphasised the historical emergence of the European states associated within the Eastern European Bloc. He pointed out to the development of their economies and social ties and benefits of the membership in the European Union. The Ambassador Chmiel in his speech highlighted the uneasy historical path of the Czechoslovakia from the prosperous and later the only democratic state in the Central Europe, through the betrayals of its allies, occupation, totalitarian regimes till the hope brought by the Velvet Revolution. The Slovak Ambassador Eva Ponomarenková then discussed the memories from the actual events in autumn 1989.

The academic panel, moderated by the Deputy Head of Mission Jan Beneš, was opened by the contributions by each guest and followed by discussion and Q&A session. After the conference the Ambassadors J. Chmiel and E. Ponomarenková opened the exhibition „Revolution in Photography“ curated by the Embassy of the Czech Republic. The conference was attended by roughly 70 people from the diplomatic corps and political, academic and cultural circles in Slovenia.
