Exhibition “Jan Palach 69” in Ljubljana

On January 17, 2019 the opening of the exhibition “Jan Palach 69” took place in the historical setting of the Town Hall of Ljubljana to commemorate the self-sacrifice of Jan Palach.

The Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Slovenia Věra Zemanová and the deputy Mayor of Ljubljana Dejan Crnek solemnly opened the exhibition which was organised by the Czech-Slovenian Association from Brno in cooperation with the “Zimske urice” association from Ljubljana.

The exhibition was introduced by Mrs Alena Šamonilová, Vice-President of the Czech-Slovenian Association. The mixed choir “Motiv” also performed at the event. The exhibition is curated by the historians Petr Blažek, Patrik Eichler and Jakub Jareš and focuses on the life and self-immolation of Jan Palach from a historical perspective. It is set in the context of the Prague Spring and the then upcoming “normalisation” and portrays, on twenty panels, the planning and realisation of Jan Palach’s act as well as the contemporaneous social response.

The opening of the exhibition was highly appreciated by the public. It was attended by many members of the diplomatic corps in Ljubljana, representatives of the Slovenian academic and cultural community, as well as the Czech and Slovenian general public.

The exhibition takes place in Ljubljana until February 2, 2019. Then it will be hosted by other Slovenian towns including Maribor, Vipava and Koper.
