Saint Wenceslas Holy Mass in the Trnovo Parish Church

On the occasion of the Czech Statehood Day, Saint Wenceslas Day, was on the 27th of September 2022 held a Holy Mass in the Parish Church of the St. John the Baptist in Trnovo, a quarter where the Embassy of the Czech Republic is located. The Holy Mass was celebrated by H. E. Archbishop Jean Marie Speich, the Apostolic Nuncio in Slovenia.

The Embassy of the Czech Republic has again reminded the Saint Wenceslas, patron of the Czech state, by organizing in collaboration with the Aposlotic Nunciature in Ljubljana a Holy Mass in the Parish Church of St. John the Baptist. The Holy Mass was attended by H. E. Alojz Kovšca, President of the National Council of the Republic of Slovenia as well as numerous Ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps, czech compatriots and the general public.

Saint Wenceslas (907-935) from the Přemyslid dynasty was as the first Czech canonized in 938, only three years after his death. The Wenceslas I, Duke of Bohemia, was murdered by his own brother Boleslav in a ruthless struggle for power. The name Wenceslas has become a synonym for Bohemia and the Bohemian royal crown. The cult of veneration of Saint Wenceslas started spreading in 10th century. Wenceslas himself became a hero of many subsequent legends, stories and songs, including the famous English carol Good King Wenceslas.

The Holy Mass was celebrated by H. E. Archbishop Jean Marie Speich, the Apostolic Nuncio in Slovenia, who has mentioned the long historical ties between the Czechia and Slovenia, which were reminded recently by the exhibition of the Embassy of the Czech Republic named Czech Footprints in Slovenia, which is currently on display in Krakovski Nasip in Ljubljana, as well as by the other exhibition of the Czech Embassy Jože Plečnik and Prague

The Apostolic Nuncio reminded of the Czech Presidency in the Council of the EU in difficult times and also called for the end of wars around the world and to aid the poor and sick.

Both the Nuncio and the Ambassador of the Czech Republic in their speeches pointed on the Russian agression in Ukraine. The Ambassador claimed that the true peace may be reached, when Russia returns the occupied territories. Both have compared the killing of Saint Wenceslas by his brother and his companions with the war among formerly brother nations of Ukraine and Russia.

The solemn character of the Holy Mass was highlighted by the musical play of the organist, who played the Czech composers.
