Symbolic Breakfast to Commemorate International Human Rights Day

On Friday, December 9, 2022, on the occasion of the commemoration of International Human Rights Day, Ambassador J. Chmiel organized a breakfast at Václav Havel's bench in the Ljubljani Northern City Park.

The event followed last year's Commemoration of Václav Havel, which took place at the same place on 15.12.2021.

The breakfast was also attended by the President of the National Assembly of Slovenia, Alojz Kovšca, and the Ambassador of Slovakia, Peter Zeleňák.

In his welcoming speech Ambassador Chmiel reminded the guests that breakfast is not chosen by chance, but refers to the famous breakfast of French President Francois Mitterrand with Charter 77 signatories led by Václav Havel, which took place in Prague on December 9, 1988, i.e. 34 years ago.

Ambassador Chmiel also commemorated former President Václav Havel, a great human rights activist, whose death on 18 December will be 11 years ago.

After the Ambassador's introductory word, laying a flower and lighting a candle at the memorial table for Václav Havel. The participants sat down with coffee and a croissant and talked about the fragility of democracy and the need to respect human rights and freedoms, the more that all three representatives come from countries that experienced a communist/socialist past.
