The premiere of the Bartered Bride in Ljubljana

On January 24, 2019 the premiere of the Bartered Bride by Bedřich Smetana took place in “SNG Opera and ballet Ljubljana”. The Bartered Bride was co-produced with the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre from Ostrava. The opera will be performed also on March 16, March 18 and June 8, 2019.

The performance of the comic opera Bartered Bride by Bedřich Smetana has been an important cultural event in Slovenia. The opera was performed after twenty-one years. In the Slovenian translation it was introduced first in 1894. The Bartered Bride is a popular opera in Slovenia and the Slovenian public is considering it like its own.

The latest performance was produced in the cooperation with the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre from Ostrava and directed by Jiří Nekvasil. David Švec, the music director of the National Theatre in Prague conducted the orchestra of the opera of Ljubljana. Daniel Dvořák was responsible for the innovative scenography and Sylva Zimula Hanáková designed the costumes. The libretto by Karel Sabina was successfully translated by Niko Štritof. The opera was accompanied with the Slovenian and English subtitles. 

The premiere of Bartered Bride was highly acclaimed by the public. It was attended by the representatives from the Slovenian cultural circles and the diplomatic community in Slovenia. At the end of the premiere the Ambassador of the Czech Republic Věra Zemanová, together with the director of the opera in Ljubljana Rajko Meserko, congratulated the Czech co-producers.
