150th anniversary of the birth of architect Jože Plečnik

January 23, 2022, marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of renowned Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik who left valuable legacy not only in Slovenia, but also in Prague and the Czech Republic.
 

Jože Plečnik (1872-1956) is best known for being chief architect of the Prague Castle. He came to Prague at request of the first Czechoslovak president T. G. Masaryk and worked on the reconstruction of the Prague Castle, the seat of Czech presidents. Plečnik was also commissioned to modernize Masaryk´s summer residence the Chateau Lány and is the author of the monumental Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord in Prague. Plečnik was not only an architect, but also a teacher who influenced about fifty architects, who later contributed to the development of Czech modern architecture.

The Czech Embassy in Ljubljana commemorated the work of Jože Plečnik by a large-format exhibition Jože Plečnik and Prague. The exhibition was first opened in Ljubljana in 2020.
