On Friday 5th May, on the occasion of visit of President Petr Pavel in London, Ambassador Marie Chatardová hosted a reception for the participants of the Children of Heroes project.
Over 35 children a grandchildren of Czechoslovak Word War II airmen and soldiers living in the UK, accompanied by their spouses, came from all over from the United Kingdom, including Scotland or the Channel Island to take part. The event also has a special guest in Mr Julian Anderson, leading British contemporary music composer and the author of the music to the project.
The Ambassador and the President held introductory speeches, which reminded the importance of the legacy of Czechoslovak WWII fighters, especially in the days of the Russian aggression on Ukraine. The participants then had the opportunity to talk to the President about their family history, but also network among themselves, as it was the first gathering of its kind in the United Kingdom.
The aim of “Children of Heroes” is to acknowledge the brave Czechoslovak air personnel and soldiers who settled, married and had children in the United Kingdom during the War and give their descendants and relatives the chance to tell the world their stories. The project has two main objectives. To map out our „children of heroes“ living in the United Kingdom and engage them, and to give them the chance to speak out about their lives of their parents and themselves via a video series published on our website and social media.
