Second British Cultural Delegation to discover Czech Art

From 9th to 13th October 2019, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in London organised a second British cultural delegation to the Czech Republic with chosen personalities from the United Kingdom, as a part of the Embassys public diplomacy programme “Czech Republic 100+”. The delegation visited a variety of Czech galleries, ateliers and artists in Prague and Kutná hora. The first cultural delegation to the Czech Republic was organised with great success in April 2017.

The delegation was composed of Mr. Jonathan Watkins, director of the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, Ms. Flavia Frigeri, Art Historian at University College London, Ms. Nicole Yip, curator at Nottingham Contemporary Art Gallery, Mr. Matthew Stephenson, independent art consultant and former director of Christie's Moscow, Mr. David Ummels, representative of Guernsey Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Alistair Hicks, curator, writer and former chief curator at Deutsche Bank, and Ms. Julia Muggenburg, Director of Belmacz Gallery London. The group was accompanied by Mr. Miroslav Ambroz, the art historian and Mr. Vladimír Kokolia, painter and Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.

The delegation visited a number of significant Czech galleries, ateliers and artists such as the National Gallery in Prague (including exhibition by Josef Bolf), Daniel Pitín’s exhibition “A Paper Tower” in Rudolfinum, the atelier of František Skála and Krištof Kintera in Prague, Centre of Contemporary Art DOX, Festival 4+4 Days in Motion and exhibition “States of Mind” by curator Richard Drury in the Gallery of the Central Bohemian Region in Kutná hora. As part of the visit, Mr. Alistair Hicks also conducted an interview with artist Viktor Pivovarov.  The symbolic peak of the programme was a reception organised in the Residence of the Mayor of Prague Mr. Zdeněk Hřib who was joined as a host by the Councillor of Prague for Culture Ms. Hana Třeštíková. HE Mr. Nicholas Archer, the British Ambassador to the Czech Republic, kindly joined the reception as well.

Following on from the cultural delegation visit, an exhibition of Krištof Kintera´s will be co-organised from 16th September to 23rd November 2020 in Birmingham by the Embassy of the Czech Republic as part of the aforementioned public diplomacy programme “Czech Republic 100+”.
