Tributes to Sir Nicholas Winton

Sir Nicholas Winton, who before the beginning of the Second World War rescued 669 mostly Jewish children from the former Czechoslovakia, would have on 19th May 2016 celebrated his 107th birthday. Family members, friends and the rescued children paid tribute to Sir Nicholas Winton with several commemorative events in London.

On the 19th May, Barbara and Nick, the children of Sir Nicholas Winton, held a commemorative memorial at London's Guildhall, to celebrate the life of their father. The memorial was attended by many prominent guests. The Czech Republic was represented by Ambassador Libor Sečka, Minister for Human Rights, Equal Opportunities and Legislation Jiří Dienstbier, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic Karel Schwarzenberg and Director of the Department of Protocol at the Office of the President Jindřich Forejt. Director of Václav Havel Library in Prague Michael Žantovský was also attending, he was one of the speakers. The memorial joined British Home Secretary Theresa May too, who personally knew Sir N. Winton.

On the 20th May, the Czech and Slovak Embassies in London co-organised a luncheon for the rescued children who arrived from around the world to pay tribute to their rescuer. Many of these encounters were very moving.

In the evening of the 20th May there was a memorial concert for Sir Nicholas Winton, in the church of St. John's, Smith Square. The proceeds from the concert will go to help child refugees.
