The legend of British euroscepticism at the Ambassador's residence

The Chair of the European Scrutiny Committee of the House of Commons Sir Bill Cash, whom Kenneth Clarke called “the greatest Eurosceptic in Westminster” in his book, attended a luncheon organised by the Czech Ambassador Libor Sečka at his residence on Friday 15th April 2016. The lunch and following lively debate was also attended by the Ambassadors of Austria, Poland and Cyprus.

Sir Bill Cash explained the reasons why he so vehemently promotes the idea of the UK leaving the European Union. To his most fundamental reasons belong the democratic deficit of the EU institutions and trade imbalance. At the same time, Sir Bill Cash heard the opinion of the Ambassadors that stems from other historical experience of their countries. They clearly stressed the need for strengthening, not weakening of the European project. The Ambassadors underlined that the European Union plays an essential role in maintaining stability and security in Europe. Sir Bill Cash, who has been a member of the UK Parliament for 32 years already, emphasised that to be sceptical of the EU, does not mean being anti-European. Both parties (the MP and the Ambassadors) appreciated the point and benefit of exchanging their views and agreed that they would continue having such a debate in the future.
