Entry of UK citizens after 01.01.2021

This article provides information about travelling of UK citizens to the Schengen Area after December 31, 2020 when they fell into the third country citizens’ category.

Short-term stay in Czechia up to 90 days

As of 31 December 2020 any privileges under EU freedom of movement will come to an end, British nationals will be subject to immigration rules for third-country, i e. max.stay of 90 days within any 180-day period. Visa-free regime applies only to short-term non-profit stays for example for the purpose of tourism, visiting friends or family, medical tourism, visiting sporting events etc.

If the purpose of stay is gainful, Schengen visa is required. Schengen visa applications can be submitted six months at the earliest and 15 days at the latest ahead of the trip.

Long-term stay in Czechia for more than 90 days

British citizens and their non-EU family members arriving to Czechia for stays longer than 90 days after 1 January 2021 will be in the position of third country nationals. These British citizens will be obliged to apply for a long-term visa (up to 1 year) or a long-term residence permit (for stays longer than 1 year). Long-term visas/residence permits (type D) can be applied for at the Czech missions directly.

Important notice

Residence card of a family member of a union citizen based on EU law, issued by the United Kingdom will no longer be valid. It means that the holder of such residence card will need to apply for a Schengen visa.

Visas or residence documents issued by the United Kingdom will no longer exempt the holder from EU airport transit visa requirements (for those countries whose citizens require an airport transit visa).

UK nationals wishing to travel to Czechia must hold a travel document valid at least 3 month after the intended date of departure from the territory of the Schengen area.
