Annual Velvet Dinner in Oxford

On 18 November 2017, the cultural attaché of the Embassy of the Czech republic in London, together with the Ambassador of Slovakia, Ĺubomír Rehák, attended an evening entitled "Velvet Dinner" organised by the Oxford University Czech and Slovak Society which was held in Sommerville College, Oxford.

The dinner was given to celebrate the anniversary of the 17th November, which is a state holiday to honour students and for Czechs and Slovaks, the symbol of the struggle for democracy and freedom. The main guest and keynote speaker of the evening was Mr. Milan Kňažko, the first Minister of Foreign Affairs of the independent Slovak state. In his speech, Mr. Kňažko emphasized the legacy and role of students during the 1989 velvet revolution as well as the Oxford´s kind care of the legacy of Václav Havel, the revolutionary leader and the first president of the Czech Republic.

The dinner was attended by over hundred and twenty Czech and Slovak students at Oxford University.
