Celebrate the 80th anniversary of Operation Anthropoid at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in London

In 2022, we commemorate 80 years since one of the most impactful military operations of World War II - Operation Anthropoid. Czechoslovak paratroopers Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš, trained by the Special Operations Executive in Great Britain, assassinated the second highest-ranking official of the Nazi regime and one of the authors of the Holocaust, Reichsprotector Reinhard Heydrich. The significance of this act not only had a major impact on the development of the war in the then Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, but throughout the whole Europe. The Embassy therefore prepared a series of two commemorative evenings to mark this important anniversary, commemorating the events of the assassination and its background in relation to the United Kingdom. Each of the evenings will consist of a lecture with a discussion and a film screening. The number of seats is limited by the capacity of the cinema.

For the day of the 80th anniversary of the assassination, we have prepared a lecture by George Bearfield and a screening of “Anthropoid”. George Bearfield is the son of the Czechoslovak parachutist Jaroslav Bublík and the nephew of Josef Bublík, who, together with Jan Kubiš and Jozef Gabčík, died in the Church of St. Cyril and Methodius in Prague after the assassination. George is the author of Foursquare: The Last Parachutist, an exciting book which tells the story of his ancestors and will address this in his lecture. British director Sean Ellis' Anthropoid is the latest film adaptation of the operation’s story, starring Irish film stars Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan.

The film will be screened in English without subtitles. Admission to the event is free, registration at events.london@embassy.mzv.cz

June 17 at 7:00 pm Gillian Halcrow's lecture "Special Operations Executive (SOE): Churchill's Secret Army" and screening of Jiří Sequens' film “The Assassination” (1964)

Venue: Cinema of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in London, 26 Kensington Palace Gardens, W84QY

The day before the anniversary of the heroic death of 7 Czechoslovak paratroopers, including Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš, in the Church of St. Cyril in Prague, we prepared a lecture by Gillian Halcrow and a screening of “The Assassination”. Gillian Halcrow is the daughter of British Lt. Col. Ernst van Maurik, who personally trained Czechoslovak paratroopers, including Jan Kubiš and Josef Bublík, within the SOE. In her lecture, she will focus on the paratrooper training within the SOE and on their selected missions, both successful and unsuccessful. The legendary Czechoslovak film “The Assassination” belongs to the golden fund of Czech cinematography and offers a unique period view of the course of Operation Anthropoid, filmed just 22 years after its execution.

The film will be screened in the original Czech version with English subtitles. Admission to the event is free, registration at events.london@embassy.mzv.cz
