Commemoration act in Plymouth

On Saturday 29th June 2019, as the opening event of Plymouth's 2019 'Armed Forces Day’, the 30th anniversary service of commemoration and thanksgiving at the RAF and Allied Air Forces Monument was held in Plymouth.

The Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Richard Ball and the representative of the RAF HQs,  Air Vice-Marshal Martin Sampson in their speeches remembered that the service was occurring during the year, when we commemorate 75th anniversary of the D-Day and in September it will be accurate thirty years, when was the RAF and Allied Air Forces Monument in Plymouth unveiled.

The monument was created when the idea for the monument was conceived in the early 1980's by ex RAF Warrant Officer Henry James (Jim) Davis, who served as a rear gunner with 90 squadron of Bomber Command. He pointed out that in that time there had not been any memorial dedicated to all members of RAF, Commonwealth and Allied Air Forces, all men and women who served during the Second World War, both in the air and on the ground.

According to the monument´s website (http://alliedairmonument.co.uk), throughout the war years, a total of 2,200 Czechoslovaks served in the Royal Air Force of which 714 were pilots and 616 other aircrew categories. Of these 537 were killed. For their gallantry, Czechoslovak airmen were awarded numerous British gallantry awards in addition to awards of the Czechoslovak War Cross, Gallantry Medal and Merit Medal.

Besides the representatives of organising country, there were the following allied countries and participating countries during the Second World War represented by diplomats during the service: Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic (Colonel Jiří Niedoba, Defence Attaché), France, Germany, New Zealand, India, the Netherlands, Poland and the U.S.A. They laid wreaths at the monument.
