Czech War Veterans in London

On Sunday 11 November 2018, Czech soldiers took part in the Rememberance Sunday commemorations on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

The Czech veterans marched alongside other British and international veterans past the Cenotaph Memorial in the centre of London which was attended by Her Majesty the Queen, Elizabeth II and other members of the British Royal Family, the Prime Minister and other members of the government and opposition.

The commemoration was attended by 10,000 war veterans from the Britsh Armed Forces and representatives of all the Commonwealth states. For the Czech veterans, their participation in such an important event was a great honour given to them both for the historical and contemporary joint struggle in the world wars and in modern conflicts (in Kuwait, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan). In the past, this tribute has only been awarded to the Polish war veterans.

Thirty Czech soldiers - modern veterans from the Czech Republic's missions in Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Iraq and Mali, represented with dignity and pride the Czechoslovak legionnaires, paratroopers, airforce, air ground personnel, soldiers of the Czechoslovak Armored Brigade and all the many other sections of the armed forces.

Part of the programme was also the act of tribute of placing memorial crosses and wreaths at the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey with the names of fallen Czech soldiers and military personnel; visiting the house in Porchester Gate, London, where the Czechoslovak military intelligence service had a seat during World War II; and visiting the veteran‘s club of the organiser of the Remembrance Sunday procession - The Royal British Legion.

At the Embassy of the Czech Republic in London, the soldiers were welcomed with a reception organised by the Defence Attaché, Col. Jiří Niedoba, where they had the opportunity to meet and talk with Ambassador Libor Sečka and representatives of Czechoslovak veteran and compatriot associations in Great Britain.

We would like to give a big thank you to the organiser of the trip, Mr. Tomáš Sláma, a modern veteran and member of the Civic Association of Czechoslovak Legionnaire‘s.
