Human Rights Day: breakfast with Belarusian opposition

On the occasion of the Human Rights Day on 10th December 2020, Ambassador Sečka invited representatives of the "Belarus Free Theater" (BFT) to his residence for breakfast. The Theater has been operating in exile in London for a long time and refers to the ideas of President Václav Havel, who met its representatives in person and who expressed his own views against violence and for freedom, among other things, through dramatic work.

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in London will consider further forms of support and possibilities of cooperation with BFT in the future.

The Belarus Free Theater (BFT) was represented by human rights activist, playwright, journalist and theater founder Nikolai Khalezin and his wife Natalia Koliada, producer of the theater. BFT operates in Britain and Belarus and its members have close relations with the Czech Republic. The debate included recollections by Belarusian activists about the meeting with President Vaclav Havel and the role of art in the fight for freedom and democracy. President Havel supported the theatrical activities of BFT, some plays of the theater also contain Czech realities - for example, a letter written by Havel (play Time of Women), or a mention of Jan Palach (play Generation Jeans). In previous years, BFT also performed on the stage of the Czech National Theater and in the Václav Havel Library in Prague.
