Commemorating Jan Palach

On Saturday 19th January 2019, Ambassador Libor Sečka honoured the memory of Jan Palach on the 50th anniversary of his death at a memorial traditionally organised by the charity, Velehrad London.

The commemorative event was opened with introductory words by Antonín Stáně, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Velehrad London, in front of the Jan Palach monument, created by František Bělský, in their garden. It was followed by a minutes silence and a speech by Ambassador Sečka, in which he mentioned that through his act, Jan Palach became a symbol of moral courage in the face of tyranny.

After that, the new Czech film "Jan Palach" was screened, and there was also an opportunity to view photographs from Palach´s funeral on 25th January 1969 in Prague by Markéta Luskačová.

The Czech Embassy would like to thank Velehrad London for organising the memorial event to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Jan Palach´s sacrifice. The legacy of his act is still alive and will live on in the future thanks to similar annual commemorative events in the Czech Republic and elsewhere in the world.
