Lidice commemoration on a football pitch

The Ambassador of the Czech Republic in London, H.E. Libor Sečka formally handed over the symbolic key of the town of Lidice to Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent, Ross Irving. The key was initially a present form H.E. Jan Thompson, the Ambassador of the United Kingdom in Prague. The formal presentation took place on 2th December 2017 on the pitch of Stoke City F.C. in the half-time of their victorious match.

The presentation, co-organised by Cheryl and Alan Gerrard from Theartbay Gallery, rose public awareness about the donations by the citizens of Stoke-on-Trent and campaign Lidice shall Live!  This campaing, organised by local doctor and politician Sir Barnett Stross, himself a Jewish refugee from Poland, helped to rebuilt the Czech village of Lidice destroyed by the Nazis during World War II.

The selfless contribution of the citizens of Stoke-on-Trent was highly appreciated by the Czechoslovak President in exile, Edvard Beneš, and it remains one of the brightest moments of the Czech-British realtions.

More information about Sir Barnett Stross and his initiative "Lidice shall Live!" is available on this link.
