Memorial ceremony in Brookwood on 5 May 2019

On Sunday 5th May 2019, a commemorative act on the occasion of the 74th anniversary of the end of the Second World War was held at the Czechoslovak Monument at the Military Cemetery in Brookwood. It was organised by the Memorial Association for Free Czechoslovak Veterans and the Czech and Slovak Embassies.

The commemorative event was attended by approximately 100 people, representatives of both Embassies - Deputy Czech Ambassador Jan Brunner, Czech Defence Attaché Col. Jiří Niedoba and Slovak Defence Attaché Col. Ján Goceliak, descendants and relatives of war veterans, representatives of Czech and Slovak associations and all those who wanted to pay tribute to the war heroes who gave their lives for the freedom of their nation and the whole of Europe.

Honorable guests included the Mayor of Woking, Graham Cundy,  Defence Attachés from the Embassies of the USA, Poland, Australia and representatives of the British Royal Air Force from Wreatham and Woking. This year, a group of Czech Scouts from Pardubice, who came to Great Britain specifically for this event, also participated. Their active approach has added another interesting and dignified dimension to the commemorative act.

The ceremony was presented by Mrs. Gerry Manolas from the Memorial Association for Free Czechoslovak Veterans. Mr. Jan Brunner and Col. Goceliak gave speeches, children from the Czech School Okénko sang the anthems of the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the United Kingdom, which was followed by the laying of wreaths and flowers and, the children also placed wooden crosses on the graves as a mark of their memories and thanks. In the other part of the Czechoslovak section of the cemetery, a new information board was unveiled. Then the guests had the opportunity to listen to stories given by the war veterans´ descendants and talk to each other during refreshments prepared by the Czech and Slovak Embassies.

We would like to thank all the organisers for a perfectly prepared event and to all participants and guests who came to pay tribute to war heroes whose bravery, devotion and patriotism we will never forget.
