Memorial in Leamington Spa

On Sunday 18 June 2017, the annual ceremony was held to commemorate the Czechoslovak paratroopers who assassinated the Nazi Reich Protector, Reinhard Heydrich in Prague on 27 May 1942.

The event took place in the park of the beautiful spa town of Leamington Spa, by a fountain in the shape of a parachute. The fountain lists the names of the seven heroic paratroopers who died in the crypt of the Prague cathedral, Ss. Cyril and Methodius: Jan Kubiš, Jozef Gabčík, Adolf Opálka, Josef Valčík, Jan Hrubý, Jaroslav Švarc and Josef Bublík.

Mrs. Georgina Pavel, trustee of the Memorial Fountain Leamington Spa Association, gave a speech, as did the Defence attachées from the Embassies of the Czech and Slovak Republics in London, Col. Jiří Svatoš and Col. Milan Gavlas. The event was also attended by the member of Parliament for Warwick & Leamington, Matt Western MP, city councillors, Czech and Slovak compatriots and friends of the association.

In total, approximately 50 people gathered together on this sunny Sunday afternoon to honour the Czechoslovak fighters who died for the freedom of Czechoslovakia.

Thank you for the photographs goes to Nick Loquens.
