ABOUT THE PLAY:
City Garage stages a timely revival of Havel’s classic piece about totalitarian regimes, censorship, and the price of integrity. In this semi-autobiographical play, translated by Czech-born playwright Tom Stoppard, Leopold Nettles, a dissident intellectual, is trapped in his apartment, waiting to be arrested at any moment. Friends show up to pressure him; shadowy figures arrive to offer him a deal to stay out of prison. His world starts to dissolve in a hallucinatory battle of conscience. Will he ultimately have the courage to stick to his convictions? Havel wrote the play when he just emerged from prison in 1984. He went on to play a major role in the Velvet Revolution that toppled communism in Eastern Europe, as well as serving as the first President of the Czech Republic. What would he make of the frightening resurgence of so many of the ideas he sacrificed so much to eradicate?
Listed by The Telegraph as one of the fifteen greatest plays of all time.

This project is supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the California Arts Council, by the City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Arts Commission, and by the California Council for the Arts, and the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles and Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles.
