Stories of Czechs in the US Northwest

After the book on interaction between the Czechs and Alaska published in 2021, “Czech in the Northwest”  is another important publication showing the history of Czech immigration into this part of the United States.

During the 19th-20th centuries more than one and a half million Czechs immigrated to the United States – but the US Northwest (meaning the states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming) was far from a common target destination. Despite this, tens of thousands of Czechs made it to this “remote” area. Yet very little is known about the fates of these pioneers. Therefore, Czech Consulate General in Los Angeles supported the project to cover these forgotten Czech-American communities between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific.

Modest book "Czechs in the Northwest" written by Prague-based historian Martin Nekola, who already authored a dozen books on Czech-American past, represents the first attempt to uncover the history of Czechs in the American Northwest. With an introduction by Jaroslav Olša, Jr., Czech Consul General, it was published by our Consulate General in Los Angeles.

If you are interested in the book, contact our consulate and we can send you either the physical copy for the libraries, or PDF.

And more is to come - we hope that in 2023 we will be able to produce another two small books covering the Czech in the US Southwest (Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona), and Hawaii and Micronesia, to be followed by a more thorough book on the Czechs in California.
