Writer Bianca Bellová in Los Angeles

English translation of a dystopian magic realism page-turner "Jezero" (The Lake) was presented in Los Angeles by its author Bianca Bellová. Translated into more than two dozen of languages, it is the 2017 winner of the EU Prize for Literature and was named Magnesia Litera Book of the Year in the Czech Republic in the same year.

This coming-of-age tale of an orphan named Nami, growing up in a fishing village somewhere in the former Soviet empire was recently translated into English by Alex Zucker and published by Parthian Books.

Though there was a major rainfall and storm in Los Angeles more than thirty people attended Bianca Bellova´s literary reading at UCLA Charles E. Young Research Library. Discussion was moderated by Jaroslav Olsa Jr. and Bianca Bellová was reading the extracts from her novel.

The event was followed by the signing session as the participants could buy the book which is now available at UCLA bookstore, and testing of various brands of Czech beers.

This event is the start of a brand-new series "Opening the Doors to Contemporary European Literature" which was created by UCLA and Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles as the part of its activities to promote and enlarge European cooperation during the Czech Presidency in the Council of European Union.
