Czech Republic: Temporary restrictions to cross-border travel

(This article expired 21.06.2021 / 09:00.)

In response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, regulations of travelers' movements into the Czech Republic are in force.

Entry of non-Czech citizens to the Czech Republic is currently restricted.

Until further notice, US passport holders are not allowed to enter the Czech Republic for the purpose of leisure, tourism, conference, visiting relatives/friends, etc. A quick reference-guide for travelers is updated on the IATA website (must click on the map of CZECHIA).

For a list of special or exceptional provisions that may allow foreigners to enter the Czech Republic(*), consult the website of the Czech Ministry of the Interior, in particular the file "Conditions for entry of persons to the territory of the Czech Republic in accordance with the Ministry of Health Protective Measure". This file is updated periodically.

Enquiries related to the entry into the Czech Republic shall be sent by e-mail to cestovani.covid19@mvcr.cz, an information hotline operated by the Czech Ministry of the Interior.

All extraordinary and protective measures and recommendations, valid in the Czech Republic in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, are published on a dedicated website of the Czech Ministry of Health.

At present, irrespective of their COVID-19 vaccination status, eligible travelers from the USA aged 5 and older must:

  • Prior to entry into the Czech Republic, notify their arrival by completing an online Public Health Passenger Locator Form. A mandatory item is their place of stay (the name of a city, town, or village) after arrival in the Czech Republic. Accompanying adults complete the form for children aged 17 and younger.
  • At most 72 hours before departure from the first embarkation point in the USA, take a Coronavirus (COVID-19) RT-PCR test.¶
  • At airport check-in for their flight to the Czech Republic, submit:
  • After entry into the Czech Republic, during a border or residence control, submit the confirmation e-mail on completing the Locator Form.
  • Not earlier than on Day 5, and not later than on Day 14 after entry into the Czech Republic, take a Coronavirus (COVID-19) RT-PCR test at a Czech COVID-19 testing center of their choice. The cost of testing shall be borne by travelers. Advance scheduling of the test appointment is possible, also before travel.
  • Until obtaining a negative RT-PCR test result from a Czech testing center, self-isolate in the declared place of stay (mandatory quarantine). While under the mandatory quarantine, travelers are not allowed to leave their residence unless they need to visit a medical facility, purchase groceries/medical supplies/fuel, take care of children/animals, visit the post office or bank, attend to official summons by state authorities or court, or attend a funeral.
  • For 14 days after entering the Czech Republic, wear a face mask in protective class FFP2 or higher, or a surgical mask (home-made face coverings, face shields, bandanas or scarfs are not allowed).

Prior to the commencement of travel from the USA to Europe, passengers should check with the operating airlines their conditions for acceptance of passengers, as well as conditions for transit at intermediary airports (testing, face covering, etc.).

(*) In general, entry is possible if the foreigner, resident in the USA, is a:
- holder of a valid residence permit in the Czech Republic,
- holder of a valid long-term ("D") visa issued by the Czech Republic,
- spouse of a Czech/EEA citizen resident in the Czech Republic,
- child under the age of 21 whose parent is a Czech/EEA citizen resident in the Czech Republic.

¶ Instead of the RT-PCR test, Czech citizens, their family members, EEA citizens resident in the Czech Republic, and foreigners with a valid permanent residence permit in the Czech Republic may opt for an antigen test, if taken max. 24 hours before departure from the first embarkation point in the USA.
