In 2017, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Harare/Lusaka in cooperation with a local organization Project Educate and a Czech NGO Njovu Zambia implemented a small local project at Katongo Primary School just outside Mongu town (Western Province of Zambia). The project whose outcome was a computer laboratory was focused on the education of school children.
Western Province is the second poorest province in Zambia. Despite the efforts of the Zambian government to increase literacy levels (including computer literacy) shown by the introduction of IT education in schools, the government has got no resources to equip the schools with computers or books. The Czech Republic intervened through this small local project by building a school library equiped with computers and books.
The pupils who go to the school are children of local subsistent farmers who are among the poorest people in Zambia. By sucessfully implemeting this project the Czech Republic has helped the disadvantaged children by giving them an opportunity to further their education and have better chances in the job market.
