Deputy Foreign Minister Martin Tlapa visits the Philippines

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Martin Tlapa arrived to the Philippines for a two-day working visit on January 12-13, 2016. He has met with the high ranking officials in the Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Trade and Industry as well as presented the possibilities of Czech-Philippine trade and investment at Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Czech Deputy Foreign Minister for Non-European Countries and Economic Diplomacy Martin Tlapa met with Acting Secretary of Foreign Affairs Laura Q. del Rosario on January 13 to discuss ways to enhance bilateral economic cooperation between the Philippines and the Czech Republic. Noting the country’s economic gains which have made the Philippines as the “most promising” Southeast Asian economy in the Czech Republic’s radar, Deputy Foreign Minister Tlapa highlighted the importance of cultivating deeper business-to-business contacts and the importance of conducting business missions in furthering trade and investment.

Acting Secretary Del Rosario, in turn, cited key spaces for possible Czech investment in the Philippines, particularly in the fields of renewable energy, telecommunications, infrastructure, glass industry, and the aviation industry. She also underscored opportunities for cooperation in tourism, education, and defense.

Earlier, the Deputy Foreign Minister Tlapa met with Undersecretary for Policy Evan P. Garcia to discuss current, emerging, regional and global political and economic issues. Both sides recognized the need to strengthen trade and investments, citing the GSP+ scheme as an important vehicle in its advancement, as well as the early conclusion of a bilateral economic agreement. To institutionalize the framework for bilateral discussions, they also committed to forge a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a political consultation mechanism in the near future.

Deputy Foreign Minister Tlapa also addressed the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry members to present business opportunities with the Czech Republic. He stressed the potential of Czech industry in Transport, Aviation, Energy, Machinery and other sectors. As Czech economy is highly dependent on foreign trade, it was not a surprise that Mr. Tlapa confirmed our support to the recently launched negotiations on PH-EU Free Trade Agreement

Deputy Minister Tlapa also paid a courtesy call to Philippine Coast Guard Officer-In-Charge Rear Admiral William M Melad at the Headquarters Philippine Coast Guard, and also addressed the Czech business community in the Philippines.
