Bersong Euro Pinoy 4: Passion and Poetry

Opening this year’s Viva Europa 2012 celebrations is the annual ‘Bersong EuroPinoy’ at Instituto Cervantes de Manila along T.M. Kalaw Street. Held last April 21, 2012, it is part of the EU Delegation’s annual dynamic showcase of the best in European arts and culture.
Now on its 4th year, ‘Bersong EuroPinoy’ is a much-awaited cultural event, a rare opportunity where one gets to appreciate classic poems recited by European diplomats and cultural representatives in their native languages, alongside those of prominent Filipino writers. A total of 7 European and 5 Filipino poems were presented to the public.
Representing the Czech Republic is the poetic masterpiece Máj (May) by Karel Hynek Mácha, known in the country as the “poet of love.” Máj tells the story of two young people and their tragic love. Its beautiful style is reflective of its origins in the Czech Romantic period.
In 2011, ‘Bersong EuroPinoy’ had the honor of being awarded the Gawad Jaime C. De Veyra – Natatanging Parangal from the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino (Commission of the Filipino Language) for "its continuous support and contribution to the awareness and growth of the Filipino language and literature, culture and the arts".
This poetry exchange coincides with the popular Día del Libro (International Book Day) in Spain which highlights Spanish cuisine, wines, games and books. A rose is given in exchange for every book sold in the tradition of the Día del Libro in Spain.
