30th Year Anniversary of the Velvet Revolution

Czech Embassy in Manila organized number of events to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Velvet Revolution in 1989, including photo exhibition, panel debate with students or film festival about the communism in Europe. 

The Czech Embassy Manila commemorated the 30th anniversary of Velvet Revolution and end of communism in Europe by organizing various cultural events.

In partnership with Ateneo European Studies, History Department, Ateneo de Manila University, and Areté Gallery, the Czech Embassy in Manila opened the "1989: The Velvet Revolution" Photo Exhibition on November 18, 2019. The vernisage was accompanied by the Lecture-Forum on end of communism in Europe and EDSA Movement.

During the discussion, Her Excellency Czech Ambassador Mrs. Jana Šedivá and Her Excellency German Ambassador Mrs. Anke Reiffenstuel expounded on the historic atmosphere and monumental events that transpired in Europe in 1989 during the Velvet Revolution in the then Czechoslovakia and the Fall of the Berlin Wall. Dr. Meynardo Mendoza, the Director of the Martial Law Museum in ADMU, shared his insights on the 1986 EDSA Revolution and reflections on how it relates to Eastern Europe. Lastly, on the friendship of Rizal and Blumentritt, Dr. Ambeth Ocampo presented his scholarly knowledge relating to Czech and German Philippine relations.

After the Lecture-Forum, Ambassador Jana Šedivá, ADMU President Fr. Jose Ramon Villarin, and other Ateneo De Manila University Officials formally opened to the public the 1989 The Velvet Revolution Photo Exhibit - a collection of images taken by 15 notable Czechoslovak photographers depicting the historical happenings in 1989 and the transition to liberal democracy afterwards. The exhibition is open to the public until December 13, 2019. The vernisage was accompanied by the music of Czehc music formation "Tram Tram Band", playing traditional Czech songs. 

Czech Embassy in Maila, in cooperation with Goethe Institute in Manila, also organized in August 2019 the "Iron Curtain Film Festival" in the premises of Film Institute of University of the Philippnes - Diliman. The three days film festival featured movies from the time of communism in Europe, depicting daily life under the totalitarian régime or impact of communist period on the lifes of ordinary people after 1989. The Czech movie shown during the film festival included "Ucho" (The Ear), "Občanský průkaz" (Identity Card) and "Kawasaki´s Rose" (Kawasakiho růže).
