Czech Republic supports aquaponic farm

Czech Republic Development Cooperation programme financed a construction of aquaponic farm near Baguio in Benquet province.

The aquaponics farm near Baguio is supposed to provide an alternative livelihood for displaced small scale miners in Benquet Province.

The project, worth of 1,000,000 PHP, was implemented by a local organization Partners for Indigenous Knowledge Philippines Inc. (PIKP) in cooperation with Batawil Small Scale Miners Association (BSSMA)

By the end of October 2020, aquaponics farm was fully completed and operational, consisting of tilapia fish tanks and vegetables planting.

The project maintenance cost shall be shouldered by BSSMA.A percentage of the sales of the fish and vegetable produced shall be set aside for the maintenance of the system. The wives of the miners and PIKP staff will be involved in marketing the produce. The aquaponics farm is developed as a demonstration and training site that will charge a fee for training courses on aquaponics. It is foreseen that in the future, the aquaponics farms can also be a tourist attraction.
