Microscopes for Veterinary Laboratory at UPLB

The Czech Republic Development Cooperation programme enabled to procure microscopes and other equipment for Veterinary Laboratory at the University of the Philippines Los Baňos.

Conservation Medicine Laboratory has been established and equipped by powerful biological microscopes at the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine of the University of the Philippines in Los Baňos. The Conservation Medicine Laboratory will serve as an initial training ground for students, local veterinarians and other stakeholders, to focus on conservation medicine in the implementation of projects that will help promote environmental, animal and human health.

It will also help shed light on the dynamics of disease spread from wildlife to domestic animals, to humans and vice versa, focusing on important pathogens such as the Newcastle Disease Virus, Angiostrongylus cantonensis, Toxoplasma pathogens etc.

In mid August 2020, UPLB-CVM also convened a forum on conservation medicine to gather interested parties working on in-situ and ex-situ conservation programme with the aim to identify areas of cooperation and enhance information exchange and collaboration among conservation workers. Nine collaborative projects are already in the initial stages.  Three project are already ongoing – ultrasonography of Palawan bearcats, Philippine Crocodiles and Saltwater Crocodiles.
