Webinar on ecotourism on Guimaras Island

Within the framework of The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development approved at the UN Summit in 2015 in New York, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Manila supported conducting a webinar where experience and information was exchanged on sustainable development and ecotourism on the island of Guimaras in cooperation with experts from the Mendel University in Brno and Guimaras State College.

The joint project of the Mendel University in Brno and Guimaras State College in the Philippines supported by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Manila followed a long-term good cooperation between the two partner institutions. By means of a programme financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic for supporting projects executing The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development approved at the UN Summit in 2015 in New York, a webinar was conducted with a participation of experts from the Mendel University in Brno and representatives of the Guimaras State College, the local Government of Guimaras island and Visayas State University Baybay in Leyte.

The goal of this project was information sharing and transfer of know-how stemming from the Czech experience with sustainable development of ecotourism in the region and other factors brought about by increased tourism in a geographically secluded area, such as environmental and social limits of ecotourism, tools for defining the sustainability goals and check of their application in reality, waste management, multiplication of economic impacts of ecotourism, circular economy, etc.

The webinar, among others, bolstered long-planned and partially implemented ecotourism projects on Guimaras island, such as a project of an eco-cyclotourism park in the vicinity of the city of Miguel, carried out by the local government in cooperation with the Mendel University in Brno, and a project of an ecotourism trail on a mango plantation, carried out by Helping Hands for Guimaras foundation in cooperation with the Mendel University in Brno.
