Membership in international organizations

The Czech Republic is a member of all important and regionally relevant international organizations that focus on political, humanitarian and economic development.

OECD membership

On December 21, 1995 , the Czech Republic officially joined the activities of the Organization for Economic Development, but intensive cooperation had already begun several years prior to the entry. Between 1990 and 1991, when the Czech Republic started to implement a market economy, the OECD provided the Central European country with important databases, analyses and consultations within the Partners in Transformation program.

Membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization

On March 12, 1999 , the Czech Republic entered the joint security system of NATO, which was intended from the beginning of the 1990s.

European Union membership

On May 1, 2004, the interest of the Czech republic in becoming a member of the EU materialized after the fulfillment of accession criteria during the Union's largest enlargment from 15 to 25 member countries.

Acceptance of the common currency, the euro

The Czech Republic expects to join the common currency around 2010. Currently, it is common practise to accept payments for goods and services in euros, and receive Czech crowns in return according to the actual exchange rates of the Czech National Bank.

Schengen Agreement


On December 21, 2007, Czech Republic became a part of the Schengen area.

In line with the EU Council Decision taken on 6 December 2007, the Czech Republic abolished checks at its land borders at midnight from 20 to 21 December 2007; border checks at the international airports on intra-Schengen flights will come to an end on 30 March 2008.
