Czech Republic supports its allies against Russian accusations at the Biological Weapons Convention on behalf of the EU

On 5 - 9 September, consultative talks initiated by the Russian Federation under the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) took place. According to Russian experts, biological laboratories of the United States and Ukraine are operating in Ukraine in violation of international law.

Russia has activated Article V of the Convention, in which the State Parties commit to cooperation and consultation in case of disputes in its implementation. This instrument has been activated only once in history, in 1997, when Cuba accused the US of using biological weapons.

On 7 September, Jitka Brodská, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic in Geneva spoke on behalf of the European Union to express considerable concerns over the whole procedure. The EU categorically condemned the Russian accusations directed at the United States of America and Ukraine of running biological laboratories on the territory of Ukraine and spread of disinformation.
