Czech UN Youth Delegates at the Conference on Disarmament

The thematic discussion on the topic of young people and disarmament held by the Conference on Disarmament took place on August 12th, on the occasion of the International Youth Day. Czech UN Youth delegates, Simona Petrů and Kristina Šůsová, gave a speech that was focused on the need to educate young people in the field of disarmament. They also spoke about participation of youth in disarmament issues, thus consistently building on the themes they have been already addressing at the UN.

The Conference on Disarmament was attended by many speakers, including youth delegates from South Korea, France, Japan, Belgium and Australia as well as diplomats. Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs, and Jayathma Wickramanayake, UN Under-Secretary-General for Youth Affairs, gave opening remarks. At the end of the conference Leslie E. Norton, current Chair of the Conference on Disarmament, thanked all the youth delegates for their participation and said that the international world needs their energy, passion, ideas, hope and optimism.
