Czech Republic as a new member of the UN Human Rights Council on the situation in Ukraine

Just two days after being elected into the UN Human Rights Council, the Czech Republic participated in the Council’s special session. The session held on 12 May 2022 was focusing on the deteriorating human rights situation in Ukraine stemming from the Russian aggression. More than 70 states and almost 20 NGOs engaged in the meeting.

In his statement on behalf of the Czech Republic, Ambassador Václav Bálek condemned the Russian aggression against Ukraine, as well as the alarmingly growing number of civilian casualties, showed support to the newly established Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine and urged Russia to allow humanitarian access into conflict affected areas.

At the end of the session, the Human Rights Council adopted a resolution reaffirming the Council‘s strong commitment to the sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine and requesting independent inquiry of human right violations. The Czech Republic supported the resolution by voting in favor.
