High-level event on New Technologies in Disaster Risk Reduction

On 12 September, the Czech Republic, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and European Union co-organized a High-level event on New Technologies in Disaster Risk Reduction. It was primarily aimed at a peer-to-peer discussion and sharing of best practices.

The speakers in the first part were Janez Lenarčič, EU Commissioner for Crisis Management, Jagan Chapagain, Secretary General of the IFRC, Mami Mizutori, Special Representative of the Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction, and Václav Bálek, Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic in Geneva.

The second part of the event featured presentations by experts from UNDRR, the Zambian Red Cross, the European Commission’s Joint Research Center and the Czech Fire Service, who focused, among other things, on a tangible demonstration of new technologies, their use and benefits for practice.

The topics elaborated and the subsequent discussions dealt with the issues of traditional technologies and digitalization, satellites or seismometers, and their importance in disaster risk mitigation, but also the latest technologies operating with artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data. Representatives of States, agencies and experts emphasized the increasing applicability of these technologies, which not only make it possible to eliminate risks arising from various disasters, but also to prevent them to a large extent. The outcome of this meeting was to raise awareness and inform relevant policymaking at the transnational, national and agency levels, as well as to feed into the preparations of the EU Council Conclusions.
