UNISDR: The Czech Republic shared experience on the implementation of the Sendai Framework

“Domestic and International Experience of the Czech Republic in Implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction” were presented by  Mr. Pavel Danihelka, professor Faculty of Law of VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava,  and Mr. Jan Daňhelka, Deputy Director of the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute, during the Support Group  of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) held on the 16th February 2017 in the United Nations Office at Geneva.

In their statements they drew attention to the hazards in the Czech Republic, in particular to the natural hazards risk, such as floods, drought and wind storms and multihazards, for instance Natural Hazards Triggering Technological Disasters. They pointed out the active engagement of the Czech Republic in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), referring to the main Czech strategic documents, e.g. Concept of environmental security and Concept of Population Protection, and specifying the connection between disaster management and sustainability. They underlined the role of the Platform for DRR in the national and European level and presented ongoing Czech bilateral and multilateral international cooperation. The presentation was positively received and during the discussion with the members of the Support Group they stressed the importance of communication and education in raising awareness of the prevention and disaster management for young people.
