High Level Briefing on the Environment for Europe Ministerial Conference | 30 Years of Achievements

On the 23rd of September, the Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic, together with the UNECE and the Geneva environment network (GEN), organised a High Level Briefing on the Environment for Europe Ministerial Conference | 30 Years of Achievements. The objective of this event was to look back at the beginnings of this process and its achievements ahead of the 9th Ministerial Conference, which will take place in Nicosia, Cyprus in early October.

 

Deputy Minister of the Environment H.E. Jan Dusík introduced the Environment for Europe (EfE) process to the participants and stressed the importance of regional cooperation in addressing environmental challenges.
Ambassador Václav Bálek and UNECE Executive Secretary Ms. Olga Algayerova in their opening remarks reminded that one of the key achievements of the EfE process was formally establishing a cooperation between state and non-state actors and creating a platform for bridging the divide on environmental issues.

Ambassador Jan Kára, who also served as Secretary of the 1991 Ministerial conference in Dobříš, spoke about the preparation of the conference and of hope that was indicative at the time. Similar sentiments were also expressed by Sylvie Motard, the acting Regional Director and Representative of UNEP, who began her environmental career in Dobříš.

The former Secretary General of the European Environmental Bureau John Hontelez, emphasised the importance of involving the civil society and of environmental democracy. Ms. Aravella Zachariou, coordinator of the 9th Ministerial Conference introduced the conference program.

Ms. Martine Rohn-Brossard, Deputy Head of the International Affairs Division at Swiss Federal Office for the Environment, reiterated the importance of national commitment at the upcoming conference. The closing remarks were offered by Zaal Lomtadze, Secretary to the Committee on Environmental Policy at UNECE. He expressed a hope that Nicosia will outshine the (accomplishments of) the previous conferences in Astana and Batumi.
