The EU supported the WHO Regional Committee for Europe resolution on the health situation in Ukraine

In the context of Russian aggression against Ukraine, emphasis is also placed on its effects on health and health systems. A Special Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe took place on 10 May. During this Special Session, 43 of the 53 countries of the region, including all EU Member States voted in favor of a resolution condemning Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Russia, Belarus and Tajikistan voted against.

The motion for a resolution was tabled by Ukraine, the EU Member States and a dozen other countries of the region. The Czech Republic participated in the preparation of the text of the resolution.

The resolution addresses, inter alia, the issue of protecting the functioning of the WHO Office for Non-Communicable Diseases, based in Moscow, and calls on the WHO Director-General to prepare a report on the health situation in Ukraine and related international health risks. The report will be discussed by the World Health Assembly at the end of May.

The gravity of the situation is evidenced by the fact that this was only the second special session in more than 70-year history of the committee (the first one was to determine the seat of the committee).
