The creation of the Conference was based on concerns of developing countries about international market, multinational corporations and great disparity between developed and developing nations.

Established in 1964, UNCTAD has progressively evolved into an authoritative knowledge-based institution whose work aims at helping to shape current policy debates and thinking on development, with a particular focus on ensuring that domestic policies and international action are mutually supportive in bringing about sustainable development. UNCTAD formulates policies relating to all aspects of development including trade, aid, transport, finance and technology.
