2016 OSCE Mediterranean Conference

Two-day 2016 OSCE Mediterranean Conference focusing on "Youth North and South of the Mediterranean: Facing Security Challenges and Enhancing Opportunities" organised by the Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs of Austria, the 2016 Austrian Chairmanship of the OSCE Mediterranean Contact Group and the OSCE Secretariat was held in Vienna on 5 – 6 October 2016.

The OSCE Mediterranean Conference presents an opportunity to share best practices and lessons learnt among the OSCE participating States and the Mediterranean Partners for Co-operation, currently represented by Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia. Due to the current developments of the security situation and the increasing trends in the fields of violent extremism, radicalisation and terrorism, there is a need for an enhanced dialogue not only among high-level representatives from the OSCE and the Mediterranean region but also the representatives of young generation, the most widely effected target group. The 2016 OSCE Mediterranean Conference enabled discussion about the challenges in the areas of social media, radicalisation and the terrorist organisations' recruitment and also about the opportunities related to larger engagement of youth in all spheres and decision making processes and at the same time about the importance of education, intercultural and religious dialogue.
