Convention on Nuclear Safety Officers’ Meeting within the Czech EU Presidency

Reception organized within the Czech EU Presidency on the occasion of the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS) Officers’ Meeting was greeted by the Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic Ambassador Ivo Šrámek and CNS President Ms. Dana Drábová. It was a great opportunity to underline our commitment to nuclear safety.

During its Presidency of the Council of the EU, the Czech Republic will focus on five closely interlinked priority areas – energy security being one of them. The Czech Presidency puts emphasis on the EU’s energy security issues, which are currently more pressing than ever, and acceleration of the transition to low-emission and renewable energy sources.

Nuclear energy has a role to play in ensuring the EU’s energy security and meeting the EU’s climate goals. It will certainly play an important role during the phase-out of coal from the Czech energy mix. Nuclear safety is in consequence one of the priority areas and the Czech Republic attaches significance to ensuring an effective and robust nuclear regulatory and legislative framework.

We are therefore honored that Ms. Drábová, Chairperson of the State Office for Nuclear Safety, continues to enjoy the support and serve as the President of the Joint 8th and 9th Review Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS). The Convention proved to be a significant instrument based on a common interest to achieve a higher level of nuclear safety. This aim is essential for the future of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy worldwide.
