Czech support within the OSCE for the Belarusian opposition and civil society

On April 26, 2021, Ambassador Ivo Šrámek attended a meeting in Vienna with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, a representative of the Belarusian opposition. He expressed solidarity with the protesters, who have been continuing their efforts to hold new, free, democratic elections in Belarus since the rigged presidential elections in August 2020. The participants discussed the possibilities of using OSCE mechanisms to support the democratic direction of the country and stop the violence.

At the same time, the Czech Republic is one of the countries that endorsed the award of the 2020 Democracy Defender Award to the unregistered Belarusian human rights organization Viasna, which celebrated its 25th anniversary on April 26, 2021 and whose members and volunteers are often targeted by the repressive elements of the regime. More information about the award can be found on Viasna’s website.
