Priorities of the Czech Chairmanship of the CoE’s Committee of Ministers

On June 1, 2017, Deputy Minister Ivo Šrámek addressed the Permanent Council of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe as the representative of the Chairman of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. At the Permanent Council’s meeting in Vienna he presented priorities and programme of the Czech Chairmanship to all 57 OSCE participating States and OSCE partner countries. He also met the Political Director of the Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs of Austria Alexander Marschik.

The Czech Republic took over the six-month Chairmanship of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers on May 19, 2017. The Chairmanship is a unique opportunity for Czech Republic’s long-term efforts aimed at strengthening human rights, democracy and the rule of law and promoting closely related values.

"Although the core mandates of the Council of Europe and the OSCE are distinct, there are number of areas where we can work together and complement each other," stated Deputy Minister Šrámek at the OSCE Permanent Council. Promoting close cooperation between the Council of Europe and the EU, OSCE, UN and other international organizations is among the main priorities of the Czech Chairmanship. During its Chairmanship the Czech Republic is committed to seeking solutions to current security and social challenges by participating in important meetings of partner organizations, sharing of information and coordinating joint responses.

The five priorities of the Czech Chairmanship are the following:

  • Protecting human rights of vulnerable or disadvantaged groups and promoting gender equality
  • Strengthening the rule of law
  • Supporting local and regional democracy and public administration reforms
  • Promoting human rights education and linguistic skills
  • Cooperation and coordination with other international organizations
