Statement of the MFA on the Solidarity Day with Belarus

The Czech Republic joins the International Day of Solidarity with Belarus, announced by the leader of the Belarusian opposition, Sviatlana Cichanouska, in the six months anniversary of the rigged presidential election.

We follow the situation in Belarus with concern and call on Alexander Lukashenko to establish a genuine dialogue with Belarusian society, for whose desire for freedom and democracy, given our own historical experience, we have the deepest sympathy and understanding. We are convinced that the only real way out of the current crisis is truly free elections, which is one of the main recommendations of the OSCE. We call on the Belarussian regime to stop violence against peaceful demonstrators, civil society and independent journalists and to release all political prisoners. We are following with great concern the reports of the poor health of prisoners, especially the detained journalist Ihar Losik. In accordance with its international obligations, the Belarussian state must guarantee human rights and freedoms to its citizens. We expect an independent investigation of all attacks on peaceful protesters. We also convey this position with the Ambassador of the Republic of Belarus to the Czech Republic, who was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in this matter.
