The Czech Republic Welcomes Resumption of the Nuclear Weapons Talks between the US and Russia

The Czech Republic welcomes resumption of the US – Russia nuclear disarmament talks in Vienna on 22 June. Prague is the city where the New START Treaty was signed in 2010. This brings a special significance for us that a progress on the extension of this Treaty is achieved between the two nuclear weapon states. We are supportive of a new comprehensive nuclear arms control mechanism involving all categories of nuclear weapons and their means of delivery that would be desirable, inter alia, in terms of fostering the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). Such a new comprehensive nuclear arms control mechanism should also include China given the size of its nuclear arsenal and its importance for reducing global nuclear threat and the role it should assume in preventing arms race and in strengthening of international security. Multilateralism and the role of other key stakeholders are also crucial for the future of the strong arms control and the confidence building.  Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic H.E. Tomáš Petříček addressed the topic in his last article Strengthening Arms Control through Multilateralism, and Multilateralism through Arms Control.
