Nairobi – celebration of the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Czechoslovakia

On Tuesday 30th October 2018 a reception was held in Nairobi’s Safari Hotel to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the independent Czechoslovak state. The reception was jointly held by the Embassies of the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic in Nairobi.

After the Czech, Slovak and Kenyan anthem was performed by the local childrens’ choir, ambassadors Pavel Řezáč and František Dlhopolček familiarized the guests with the most important historical moments over the course of the cohabitation of Czechs and Slovaks in one state, as well as with the current nature of relations between both countries and the Republic of Kenya. A special part of the speech of the Czech ambassador was dedicated to the history of the Baťa company’s involvement on the African continent and in Kenya particularly. A speech was also made by Mr. Ababu Namwamba, the Chief Administrative Secretary of the Ministry of Foreiogn Affairs of Kenya, who expressed a high esteem for the quality of relations with both countries.

The reception was attended by approximately 350 guests from the Kenyan civil service and diplomatic corps, as well as by the representatives of the business circles and Czech and Slovak communities.

A highly emotionally charged feature of the shared national reception was the performance of a childrens’ choir from the St. Philip Neri Primary School. The national anthems had been rehearsed at a very professional quality and the children likewise demonstrated samples of Czech and Slovak folklore – the songs „Ach synku, synku“ and „Tancuj, tancuj“. Their performance very genuinely touched many of those present.

The hall where the reception was held also featured the exhibitions “The Phenomenon Baťa“ and “100 years of Czech and Slovak diplomacy“.

The common reception of the Czech and Slovak Embassies in Nairobi became a very successful and dignified celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the founding of the independent Czechoslovak state.
