Jiří Šedivý participated in the Geneva Peace Week

Ambassador Jiří Šedivý represented the Czech Republic on a panel discussion held on November 6, jointly organized as part of the Geneva Peace Week by the permanent missions of the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the UN in Geneva together with the Geneva Centre for Democratic Control of Armed Forces. The panel discussion focused on the relationship between security sector reform and protection of human rights.

Ambassador Šedivý confirmed that the training of security forces on human rights issues constitutes a regular part of the pre-deployment of NATO forces. Minister of the Foreign Affairs of Slovakia Miroslav Lajčák stressed that efforts on security and human rights are inseparable. Human rights violations are often the first signal of an emerging conflict. Therefore, the prevention and coherence between security and human rights approaches need to be strengthened. This point was also underlined by other participants, including representatives of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Ms. Ana Glenda Tager, director of a non-governmental organisation from Colombia, provided practical examples from her country.
