Visit of Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar in the Czech Republic

External Affairs Minister, Government of India, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar visited the Czech Republic from June 4th to 6th, 2022.

He was accompanied by Joint Secretary of the Central Europe Division of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, Ms. Neeta Bhushan, Ambassador of India to the Czech Republic Mr. Hemant Kotalwar and other dignitaries.

He began his engagements by a meeting a delegation of the Czech Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) Jan Zahradil, Tomas Zdechovsky, Mikulas Peksa and Veronika Vrecionova. Dr. Jaishankar had a good discussion with them on India's ties with EU and the Czech Republic, the Indo-Pacific, food and energy security and digital cooperation.

He also had a productive meeting with the Czech counterpart Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Mr. Jan Lipavsky, however the meeting had to be held online since Minister Lipavsky has been tested Covid-19 positive just before the meeting. Therefore, Minister Jaishankar was personally greeted at the Czernin Palace in Prague, seat of the Czech Foreign Ministry, by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Martin Tlapa, by the Special Envoy of the Czech Republic for Indo-Pacific Ambassador Libor Secka and by the head of the Department of Asian and Pacific Countries Dr. Eliška Žigová.

As the Czech Republic takes over the European Union Presidency from 1 July 2022, both Foreign Ministers J. Lipavsky and S. Jaishankar spoke about EU - India relations.  The Ministers had a discussion on the steady progress in bilateral cooperation, including in trade, defence, science and technology and people-to-people contacts. They welcomed the bilateral trade level crossing two billion dollars in 2021. They also exchanged views on the repercussions of the Ukraine conflict and the Indo-Pacific.

During his visit to the Czech Republic, Minister Jaishankar also visited the "Thakurova" street named after famous Indian personality Rabindranath Tagore and paid tribute to him there, in front of his statue in Prague. He said, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore is widely admired by the Czech people and the memorial is in a street named after him.

In addition to the meetings with the political leadership of the country, Dr. Jaishankar also interacted with a cross-section of the Indian Diaspora, including Indian students studying in the Czech Republic. Dr. Jaishankar shared with them developments at home and the state of India-Czech Republic bilateral relationship.

The official visit of Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar to Prague was another evidence of the strong and traditionally very good relations between the Czech Republic and India. During the last 5 years, bilateral meetings were held at the highest possible levels including the President, the Prime Minister, the External Affairs Minister, the Defense Minister, the Minister of Trade and Industry, the Environment Minister and the Chiefs of Defense Staff. The relations between the two countries are deepening in most of the sectors.
